PM Modi on evacuation of Indians from Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing an election rally in Uttar Pradesh, said on Wednesday it was because of India’s “rising power” that his government was able to bring back citizens from war-torn Ukraine. “It’s because of India’s rising power that we are able to evacuate citizens from Ukraine,” PM Modi said while campaigning for the sixth phase of Uttar Pradesh elections in Sonbhadra, according to news agency PTI.

He also asserted India would not spare any effort to bring home citizens from Ukraine. As the situation in Ukraine which is witnessing Russia’s military offensive continues to remain grim, Prime Minister Modi held four high-level meetings in the last three days to discuss the situation there and review the ongoing efforts under Operation Ganga to bring back Indians stranded in the war-ravaged country. Of the estimated 20,000 Indians, including students, who were stranded in Ukraine at the start of the Russian offensive there, 60 percent have crossed Ukrainian borders and are safe with efforts underway to rescue the remaining people, the Centre has said.

Amid the high-octane electioneering for state elections, the Ukraine-Russia conflict and SOS calls from Indian students stranded there has given fodder to opposition to target the government. Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday claimed that the BJP government was “more interested” in campaigning for the ongoing Assembly elections in the five states rather than chalking out a proper evacuation plan for those stuck in Ukraine.
