Javed Akhtar seriously opposes Kangana Ranaut’s plea seeking transfer of defamation case

writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar has “seriously” opposed the petition filed by actress Kangana Ranaut against him in the Dindoshi sessions court. Akhtar filed a reply in the court through advocate Jay K Bharadwaj and stated that Ranaut’s plea was “devoid of all merits and is liable to be dismissed at the very threshold and the same is only filed to delay the proceedings before the 10th Metropolitan Magistrate (MM), Andheri Court, Mumbai.”

Ranaut is seeking transfer of Akhtar’s petition from the 10th Magistrate court to some other court. Her plea came up for hearing before Judge Shridhar M Bhosle on Thursday, January 27. Both advocates Rizwan Siddiquee and Bharadwaj were present and the judge asked if it was agreeable to both the parties, then “without going into the merits of the case”, the issue could be decided.

While Siddiquee agreed to it, Bharadwaj opposed by saying, “we have serious objections against the plea and we want to argue the case on merits.”

The court then decided to keep the case for arguments on merits on February 4, 2022.

Ranaut had approached the court stating that that the offence initiated against her by Akhtar was “bailable, non-cognizable and compoundable”. Despite being aware of the same, the Andheri court Magistrate RR Khan on “every given opportunity” sought to “misuse his powers and cause injury” to Ranaut even before the commencement of trial, alleged Ranaut.
